I Just Want to Sleep!

Raise your hand if you’ve ever laid down to sleep at night, totally exhausted… and when your head hits the pillow, a million thoughts seem to flood through your brain.
Annoying, right??

So how do you set yourself up to be able to lay down and actually enjoy some sweet rest without all those thoughts swirling around? Here’s 3 things that you can try:

1 – Set yourself up for a good morning by getting your coffee maker set up, setting out your clothes, and maybe even prep those lunches if you generally have a busy morning.
What good does this do?? Making sure that you’re prepared for the morning can alleviate subconscious (or conscious!) stress and allow you to descend into rest easier. Think about the way your mornings usually run, identify your stress points, and do what you can to set yourself up for a good morning the night before.

2 – Take some time to review your day before going to sleep.
This could look like a bullet journal, a narrative journal, a gratitude journal, or whatever your preference is. Make sure that you’re especially taking the time to write down anything that is causing you stress, anxiety, or overwhelm. Maybe you couple your journaling with a meditation session, or use some essential oils and a breathing technique to help your body calm down – especially if it was a stressful day.

3 – As you lay down, take some time to review the things that you’re grateful for.
You know that saying, “count your blessings”? Allowing yourself to fall asleep thinking about the blessings in your life can usher in feelings of safety, contentment, and happiness – ideal for allowing both your mind and body to relax into your REM cycles.

To summarize –

Set yourself up for success by taking care of your early-morning stressors before winding up your day.
Review your day and dump any stressors into your journal, and take the time to allow your body to release the stress as well.

Focus on the positives in your life as you lay down to sleep.

You may be thinking that it just can’t be that easy, but take it from me – small changes can have huge effects. As always, try incorporating these into your daily routine one at a time, taking a good week to focus on each one before incorporating the next one.
